From old gears to new heights: Caroline’s ride of accomplishment

post image

20+ years. That’s how long Caroline’s bike has been with her. And in 2025, it helped her cross the RBC GranFondo Whistler finish line in under 5 hours.

“I wanted to go under 5 hours,” Caroline told us. “And I did it!”

Caroline trained with intention but not intensity. Her prep plan? “One long ride every week, a couple rides during the week, and hills. Always hills.” That discipline paid off, even when the day came with a few wild cards.

“The weather was the big anxiety. But it ended up being better than I thought. That last hill, with about 20km to go? You just have to suck it up, buttercup. Just go.”

Without a team to ride with, Caroline found motivation in unexpected ways: by picking out riders ahead and making her own goals: “First it was this red person, then purple, and even Bert and Ernie,” she laughed.

Why does she ride the 'Fondo?

“You just gotta do it. I think it’s a bucket list thing. Even though I sign up every year.”

If she had to sum up the experience in one word? “Accomplishment.”

And her faithful two-decade-old ride? “Thanks, old friend.”

As for what’s next? Caroline’s eyeing a new challenge, this time a little farther south. “I think I wanna go to Mexico and do that [GranFondo Riviera Nayarit]. Plus try and get some friends to go. It’ll be my first time in Mexico!”
