I should try that, I thought! "So I bought a road bike and explored the stirring rides around Vancouver and the North Shore. Although ambitious for my first year, I decided to try the ultimate road bike event on the continent – the 122 km RBC GranFondo Whistler along the stunning Sea-to-Sky corridor from Vancouver to Whistler featuring over 2000m of climbing. "A dozen bike seasons later, and I am about to embark on my tenth straight RBC GranFondo Whistler. Decima. This year, at age 45, I’m attempting the Forte category for the first time. "In my early Fondos, it wasn’t pretty. It took me over six hours, and I finished around the 30th percentile. I recall having myriad mech issues with my bike and being sat slumped in the shade of the Salt Shed rest station, not really wanting to get back on the steed. Still, it was an amazing experience, capped off with a celebratory group meal at Hy’s in the Gran Fondo tradition. (Negroni, anyone?) "What more could I do to improve, I wondered? Biking up Grouse Mountain had made me adept at climbing. However, I am slow on the flats. "So, I sought the assistance of a coach (pictured up top, on the right) who spent time in Iceland, a country notorious for its grueling flat and windy stretches of highway. Who better than to help with flat land and drafting training than this expert, I reasoned. "Ultimately, I expect I will come back full circle to sitting in the Salt Shed shade after 6 grueling hours in the saddle. Either way, it will no doubt be a legendary ride capped off with a BIG medal and celebratory meal in that same Gran Fondo tradition.
