Then came the countdown.

The click of cleats.
The ring of cowbells.
The cheer from somewhere behind you.
The rush of wheels
rolling north.

For the first time,
every place was taken.

Sold out.

Thousands of riders,
thousands of reasons,
one road.

And what a road it gave us.

Blue sky overhead.
The Pacific beside us.
Mountains sharp against the horizon.
The kind of September day
you wish you could bottle.

But maybe you don’t remember a day like this
by how it looked.

Maybe you remember
how it sounded.

The quiet buzz of a freewheel.
The shift before the climb.
The breath beside you getting heavier.

A volunteer calling out,
you’ve got this.

Your name from the roadside.

A laugh when the legs were hurting.

Someone you had never met saying,
come on.

And you did.

You kept going.

Until Whistler got closer.
Until the noise got louder.
Until the finish line heard you coming.

This year,
new names were called to the stage.

Our first Medio podiums.

More cheers.
More hands in the air.
More reasons to stand a little taller.

Then, at the finish: gelato.

Because sometimes
the sound of victory
is applause.

And sometimes
it’s a spoon
scraping the bottom of a cup.

By evening,
the road was quiet again.

No cowbells.
No countdown.
No roar from the finish.

Just the mountains.
The ocean.
The Sea to Sky
returning to itself.

But somewhere,
a rider was still hearing their name.

Someone was replaying
the words that got them up the climb.

Someone was remembering
why they rode.

Someone was thinking:

I did that.

That is the sound
we carry home.

That is the sound
that stays.

And next year,
the road will call again.

New reasons.
New stories.
New voices joining the chorus.

The Sea to Sky will wake up once more.
